Wall Art Ideas for Small Homes and Rented Apartments

Wall art is the fastest way to make a room feel finished, and it is one of the few upgrades that works even in a rented apartment. The trick in a small space is choosing the right scale rather than simply buying more frames.

Getting the size right

A common mistake is hanging art that is too small for the wall. As a rough guide, artwork should span roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. Above a study desk or a bed, one larger piece almost always looks better than three tiny ones scattered apart.

Where to hang it

Centre artwork at eye level — roughly 145 to 150 cm from the floor to the middle of the frame. In a small room, a single well-placed piece above the sofa or bed creates focus, while art crowded on every wall makes the space feel tighter than it is.

Renting? Hang without holes

Adhesive strips designed for wall mounting hold lightweight frames securely and come off cleanly. For heavier framed pieces, a picture ledge fixed to a single wall lets you lean and rearrange art without drilling repeatedly.

Building a gallery wall on a budget

Start with three to five pieces that share one common thread — the same frame colour, or the same palette. Lay them out on the floor first and photograph the arrangement before touching the wall. Motivational typography prints, minimal line art and calligraphy pieces mix particularly well together.
